David Erdos

David Erdos, Junior Research Fellow in Law, works principally on the origins and impact of Bills of Rights in the Westminster World (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), research that he is currently writing up as a book to be published by OUP. Previously, he completed his PhD at Princeton University, and held a postdoctoral position at the University of York.

During his time at Balliol and at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies in Oxford, Erdos will be developing research that looks more broadly at the nature of constitutional reform in the UK and other Westminster Democracies. He comments: "I am particularly interested in examining how developments at the European level have, and are, impacting upon the UK constitution and also on how conflicts between 'rights' - such as freedom of expression, non-discrimination and privacy - are being and should be managed."

On being a JRF, he comments: "Balliol has provided excellent support for my work since I have arrived, and provides a great attachment given its collegiality and long history of both involvement in political and social affairs and its international links."

Dr David Erdos (BA Merton College, Oxford and PhD Princeton) comes to Balliol from the University of York where he was a Postdoctoral Fellow.

Whilst at Balliol, Dr Erdos will be developing new research looking more broadly at the nature of constitutional reform in the UK and other Westminster democracies.He will examine not only at the developments in the area of legal rights but also ethno-national relations and the electoral and parliamentary arena.Beyond this area of study, he has interests in political and legal philosophy and in the law and politics of human rights, especially elsewhere in the Commonwealth.

David Erdos is a political scientist working principally on the origins and impact of Bills of Rights.David's current work focuses on explaining Bill of Rights outcomes in the Westminster world (the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia).This work looks both at the immediate triggers behind Bill of Rights adoption and on possible longer-term relationships between such projects and neoliberalism, social heterogeneity and 'postmaterialization'.He is also developing a new project which looks more broadly at the nature of constitutional reform in the UK and other Westminster democracies.This project examines not only developments in the area of legal rights but also in ethno-national relations and the electoral and parliamentary arena.Beyond this area of study, David has interests the changing nature of the UK Constitution and in the interaction between human rights and the regulatory state (especially how privacy and data protection relates to, and may conflict with, freedom of expression).

David has presented his research at a number of academic conferences not only in the UK both also in North America and Australasia.
