CONCORD - In his nearly 40 years in practice, Dr. George Engstrom has provided care during 228,000 patient visits.
Engstrom, 71, was a pediatrician - most of the time.
"The oldest patient I cared for was 28-years-old when I discharged him - he was getting married," Engstrom said.
The patient, who taught at a local high school, just didn't want to let go of his childhood doctor.
"One day I asked him if he wasn't embarrassed sitting in the waiting room with some of his students. He told me, 'not at all,' " Engstrom said.
The patient said he liked the care he received at Cabarrus Pediatrics and, "besides, you are cheaper than other doctors."
Engstrom is well known in the community and has acted as pediatrician to more than one generation of many families.
About six years ago he cut his hours down to part-time, and two years ago at age 69, he officially retired from Cabarrus Pediatrics - sort of.
The same way the patients didn't want to leave Engstrom, Engstrom can't seem to leave his patients.
Patients can't actually make an appointment with him, but he still helps out at Cabarrus Pediatrics during the busy winter months.
Engstrom said he had a lot of plans for when he retired, but many of his plans haven't really come to fruition.
"I was going to begin to do some serious drawing and painting but I haven't got around to it," he said.
That's because he stays busy working for his community. On Thursday mornings, he can be found at Stonewall Jackson Training School, where he holds a medical clinic for the 85 boys who reside at the facility.
He is the president of Historic Cabarrus and is active in the Cabarrus Art Guild.Engstrom is on the ethics committee at NorthEast Medical Center and is a medical director at Hospice of Cabarrus County, where he can be found one or two days a week.
"To be honest, my main function (at Hospice) is to sign papers, but sometimes the nurses have questions about management or dosage," he said.
The one hobby Engstrom and his wife, Linda, make sure they have time for is gardening.
