Eric Engstrom, a Wichita historian and coin collector who has written two books on coins, said he's hoping that whatever design is submitted will follow basic design standards and fit within the confines of a quarter's diameter -- three-quarters of an inch.

"It needs to have simplicity of design - something that properly reflects the state yet something that is comprehended quickly as you look at it," Engstrom said.

He said one design that might be effective is the "Ad Astra" sculpture that now sits atop the state Capitol dome in Topeka.

"You are dealing with a round window and you have to make sure the design fits within that window," he said."The upper portion of the Indian is very dynamic with the bow and arrow raised toward the stars."
