    Apex Interrogation: Elizabeth Engstrom

Elizabeth Engstrom is the author of ten books and over 250 short stories, articles and essays. She is a former publisher and editor, and is a sought-after speaker and teacher at writing conferences and conventions around the world. A recluse at heart, Engstrom holds a BA in English Literature/Creative Writing and is currently seeking her Master's degree in Applied Theology. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her fisherman-husband and their duck-tolling retriever. Her most recent novel was The Northwoods Chronicles. Find out more at www.elizabethengstrom.com.

Apex: Your work covers a range of topics from the supernatural to the scientific to the day-to-day interactions of human beings, yet nearly all of it has a dark tone. What is it that appeals to you about horror and dark fiction?

Elizabeth Engstrom: I think it's the cautionary tale aspect, the "you better watch out" alarm that dark fiction affords us.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: I grew up reading Robert Heinlein, Rod Serling, Edgar Allan Poe, Theodore Sturgeon, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Octavia Butler, and perhaps most influential, Shirley Jackson.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: I devoured Stephen King in his heyday, as well as John Saul and Dean Koontz.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: I find teaching to be very stimulating, engaging, and a lot of fun.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: I'm tempted to say that the one I'm working on is the most challenging, but that's a given.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: Again, I'm tempted to say that the one I'm working on is my best work.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: Well, the first and most obvious is that my storytelling skills have increased exponentially, thanks in large part to the aforementioned students and classes.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: Strangely enough, "When Darkness Loves Us" came to me almost fully formed while in the midst of an excruciating bout of claustrophobia while riding the submarine in Disneyland.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: Ideas are everywhere, all the time.
    ...
Elizabeth Engstrom: I'm finishing my master's degree in theology while working on the next book. Tempered is a post-apocalyptic tale-very dark-with aspects of science fiction and fantasy thrown in. I can't seem to keep what I'm learning from seeping in, so there will be a generous dollop of desperate, misguided religion incorporated as well.

If she isn't writing , Elizabeth Engstrom is teaching , and many new writers are happy to have had her influence in their careers.WRITERS REVIEW asked her about stereotyping , the basic tools of the writing craft and her writing strategy from getting started to getting published.

WR : Reading your work reveals that you are not easily stereotyped by your writing , even though you are best known as a Horror writer.Do you think it is damaging or productive for a newly-published writer to be slotted into a specific writing category , especially if they want to make a name for themselves.

Elizabeth on stereotyping : I think stereotyping is always damaging. My work can be found , oddly enough , under horror , literature , biography , historical , mystery and fiction.I would prefer that it was just found under fiction..I wrote one horror novel and am therefore always referred to as a horror novelist , which is flat-out wrong. But that isn't in my control. back.

WR : There are no set formulas for writing success.
    ...
Elizabeth on basic writing tools : Every writer needs a basic understanding of the structure of fiction. There is a protagonist , who change over the course of the story , an antagonist that prompts that change , and conflict to fuel the plot.Christopher Vogler's book , The Writer's Journey is the most valuable reference work a writer can have on the shelf. But structure is nothing without the character to engage the reader's interest.Writers should endlessly practice honing their craft : introducing characters , making them rich , deep , believable.Writing scenes that twist a reader's emotions one way and then another.Practice.
