   HARRINGTON - Harrington Business and Professional Women selected its immediate past president, Dawn Elliott, as its 2004 Woman of the Year.
   
   "I was really honored to be chosen," said Mrs. Elliott. "I was not expecting it and was pleasantly surprised."
   
   Mrs. Elliott is owner and operator, president, treasurer, and systems development manager of her own business, Atlantic Telephone & Data Solutions, Inc., a Harrington business engaged in the creation of internal processes for telephone and computer clients.
   
   She is also a wife who partners with her husband in business, a parent who is helping two young daughters get a start in the business world, a continuing student looking to master new information and technologies, and an active member of professional and community organizations.
   
   Mrs. Elliott grew up in Shelbyville, Tenn., and remains close to her family there. After graduation from high school, she joined the United States Air Force, where she achieved two crucial milestones, finding a life partner and developing skills that would become the basis for her business.
   
   While stationed at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, she met her husband, Jay Elliott, a Delmar native. During her first three years of active duty there, she was a plumbing specialist with the 75th Civil Engineering Group. Then, in her fourth year of active duty, she began working with computers as a civil engineering squadron scheduler. During reserve duty she became a medical records specialist with the 419th Fighter Wing, learning to combine the computer work to mirror the paper work.
   
   Since 1991, she and her husband have owned and operated Utility Audit Group, Inc.

   Dawn has assisted Kim (an 18-year-old college freshman) in starting her own business doing computer work, mailing list maintenance, database creation and Web site design for others. She also helps 12-year-old Alissa with her business, Delicious Delights, which produces and sells fudge and other homemade goodies.
   
   Dawn is constantly honing and increasing her knowledge and skills through continuing education. She is currently a student at Delaware Technical & Community College, where she is working toward an associate degree in accounting and business management. At DelTech, she maintains a 4.0 average and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. She has also taken advantage of opportunities to upgrade her professional skills through a variety of advanced training programs, seminars and workshops.
   
   As an active member of the professional community, Dawn is immediate past president of BPW Harrington and has served on the executive committee of BPW Delaware, where she was finance committee chairman, connections chairman and is now recording secretary. She is also a member of the Harrington Business Association (currently serving as secretary), the Veterans Corporation and the Better Business Bureau of Delaware. Her talents have been further used to benefit the community. She was a United Way Harrington committee member from 2000 until 2002, and for the past five years, has served as leader for the Harrington Sunshine 4-H Computer Project Group.
   
   Although she has had many struggles in her life, Dawn feels those times have helped make her a stronger person. The struggles have been instrumental in forming her outlook on life. One of the toughest times she faced as an adult was the death of her first daughter, Kathy, at the age of 71/2. Even through the terrible pain, Dawn was sure that God had a purpose for taking Kathy.
   
   If Dawn could make a wish for her life, her family, her friends and her community, it would be to celebrate life. She says, "Celebrate by making the most out of your life, by cherishing your family, giving to others and sharing a positive attitude with everyone with whom you come into contact.
