"Dan's body is a dump truck," says Dr. Michael Elice of Woodbury, who has been our son's bio-medical physician since late 2007. "But it's a dump truck that isn't dumping."

I met Dr. Elice at last year's Autism United Walk just as desperation was setting in.
    ...
"My kid is twenty," I told Dr. Elice, as he too marched. "Is it too late?"
    ...
"We know more now than then," Dr. Elice said. I looked at him wondering if he could get this right, when nobody else had.

All I can report are the facts:

Dan's teachers say that, if anything he is getting better not worse. There have been years when this was not true. Notably, we have seen vast improvements in his "gut." He used to "go" eight times a day. Now he's down to three visits or less.
    ...
Our friend Mickey, whose son is a team member - making Mickey a member ofmy team, the team of beleaguered autism parents, the team of those who notice -- did indeed notice.

"Dan did great," said Mickey, who is not prone to hyperbole and who has learned from his own experience not to believe in miracles, either.

Dr. Gordon is in that cadre as is my son's physician Dr. Michael Elice of Woodbury, New York.

In recent weeks, Dr. Elice has helped us to take Dan off of this drug, replacing it with bio-medical interventions that deal with problems in his immune system rather than his brain.

    Michael W. Elice M.D.

Dr. Elice is a board certified pediatrician and has been in practice for 30 years. Originally in practice in Great Neck, New York, he joined Dr. Boris in their specialized practice. After diagnosing patients with ASD, he has sought to find alternative approaches to helping treat these children. Most of the pediatric allopathic community has been trained to approach autism as a behavioral disorder without any thought of medical intervention. Thus far, only ABA, Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapies have been the mainstay of treatment.

Biomedical treatment of autism and ASD is based on the idea that autism is actually a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with genetic, epigenetic, metabolic and autoimmune origins. By taking thorough medical and family histories, complete physical examination and neurological examination, evaluating blood and urine laboratory tests, the etiology of the individual's disorder can be determined in most cases. Dr. Elice follows the Defeat Autism Now! Protocol which included dietary manipulation, vitamin andmineral supplementation, allergy testing and treatment, chelation of toxic metals such as mercury, aluminum, arsenic, antimony, nickel, cadmium and intestinal dysbiosis treatment.

Dr. Elice is a graduate of Syracuse University and the Chicago Medical School. He completed his pediatric residency at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. He has academic teaching positions and is on the staff of North Shore University Hospital and Schneider Children's Hospital. He is an associate professor of pediatrics at the New York University Medical School and the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He is on the medical advisory board of the New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) and is a member of the National Autism Association New York Metro Chapter. He has lectured at Defeat Autism Now! Conferences around the country.
