Minnesota's David Ekern Named New Director of ITD

The Idaho Transportation Board selected David S. Ekern, assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, as ITD's new director.
Ekern, 57, assumes responsibility for a department that has 1,838 employees statewide and an annual budge of nearly $450 million.He will begin his new duties on July 15.

"(Ekern) also brings a management style that is highly supportive of the ITD culture and the quality employees we have in the Department," Winder added.

Ekern brings to Idaho more than thirty years of experience in engineering, administration and transportation-related legislation.He served in numerous positions within the Minnesota Department of Transportation and was involved in transportation issues nationally through the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the Transportation Research Board.

A life-long Minnesota resident, Ekern is a strong advocate of transportation and its role in society.He has been involved in initiatives such as intelligent transportation systems, asset management and defining the role of transportation departments in the twenty-first century.
In September 2001, he joined AASHTO in Washington DC under a unique loaned executive cooperative agreement.In that new role, he serves as Associate Director, focusing on transportation operations.
Before accepting the assignment in Washington, Ekern held positions ranging from legislative assistant and project manager to Director of Environmental Planning, Director of Highway and Area Planning, Maintenance Engineer, District Engineer and Director of the Division of Engineering Services.
He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and a master's in business administration from the College of St. Thomas in 1981.A registered professional engineer, Ekern has served on and chaired numerous professional and civic organizations.
He has been on AASHTO committees engaged in security technology deployment, environmental streamlining and context sensitive design.
Ekern replaces Dwight M. Bower, who retired in January after nine years as head of the Transportation Department.
