Larry Eisinger
"Do-it-yourself" has become more a way of life than a hobby for people everywhere. To many would-be handymen, however, it can often mean anything from a sore thumb to a headache. But help is close at hand. For over 20 years, Larry Eisinger's weekly column, HOME WORKSHOP, has served as a practical guide for the do-it-yourself builder, offering information on the latest tools, how-to techniques and products to help assure success.
Eisinger provides easy-to-follow diagrams that dovetail with non-technical text on how to tackle those home improvement projects with less pain and confusion. HOME WORKSHOP offers instruction on carpentry, plumbing, electrical and even concrete work, including thousands of time- and money-saving tips. By clipping and saving the stories, readers can even build an encyclopedia of home repair.
"Pride of workmanship has always been a motivator with how-to projects, but saving money is a more realistic reason for going the do-it-yourself route," said Eisinger. "With the current boom in building making skilled help scarce, readers really benefit from having the latest information on how-to techniques and products."
One of the foremost authorities in the do-it-yourself field, Eisinger is the former workshop and science editor of Mechanix Illustrated Magazine and former editor-in-chief of Fawcett's How-To Books and Special Interest Magazines. He is also the creator of Fawcett's Mechanix Illustrated Do-It-Yourself Encyclopedia and The Practical Handyman's Encyclopedia, with combined sales of almost 20 million copies.
Eisinger is the author of How to Build and Contract Your Own Home, written and photographed while he built his own home on Staten Island, New York. He did all of the carpentry, most of the concrete, some of the plumbing and electrical work and all painting, finishing and irrigation, including building everything from kitchen cabinets to complex swimming pools. He also wrote and currently publishes Larry Eisinger's Super Book of Home Repairs, Remodeling and Building, a 544-page hardcover title covering major how-to skills.
Eisinger is gearing up for his next do-it-yourself conquest -- he is building another home, this time on Cape Cod. -
