The Brain Machine Interface Program is "the newest and boldest initiative in human performance enhancement," according to Eric Eisenstadt, M.D., of the Pentagon's Defense Sciences Office.
The program, part of Defense Advanced Research Projects, is studying how to teach the human brain to accommodate synthetic devices. Like the monkeys, people will soon be able to control devices not connected to them. And like the rats, people will soon be made to move or perform tasks by someone else with a remote control. At the same time, says Eisenstadt, other Department of Defense research seeks ways to "monitor brain patterns associated with a wide variety of behaviors and activities relevant to the D.O.D."
