Susan Eisenhower: U.S. Needs Russia as an Ally to Help in Fight Against International Terrorism

America needs to work with Russia to overcome the threat of global terrorism, Susan Eisenhower told the Feb. 11 NPC Luncheon. Eisenhower, the granddaughter of the late U.S. President, is President of the Eisenhower Institute, a foreign policy think tank. She said that our former Cold War enemy is now "the linchpin in our War on Terrorism," and we can benefit from their experience in Afghanistan in the 1980s and currently in Chechnya. She called for rethinking our priorities for an arms buildup, which Russians interpret as a possible threat. "We cannot win the War on Terrorism without the international community, and that means nations who are not normally our allies," she said. Addressing another potential flashpoint, Eisenhower urged the administration to "think hard" about balanced relations with India and Pakistan, two nuclear nations. "We need to be an "honest broker" and not take sides," she said.
