With his son in the Army and his daughter away at college, Milton Eisenhower was no longer content at Penn State.In June 1956, he surprised the trustees with his resignation.He intended to move to Washington and advise his brother on a full-time basis, but not long after, Johns Hopkins offered him its presidency.
The trustees were shocked by his resignation and asked his advice on a successor.They remembered only too well the contentious three years they had spent finding him.Eisenhower quickly replied that he thought engineering dean and newly named Vice President for Research Eric A. Walker would be an outstanding president.
