In addition to presentations on NCUA's lending regulations, Truth in Lending Act regulations and the regulatory structure in general, this year's intense, five-day educational program also featured a presentation on ethics and regulatory compliance from Stephen Eisenberg, Pentagon FCU's senior vice president and general counsel.
Eisenberg, who has been at past Regulatory Compliance Schools, said his goal for the ethics presentation was for participants to leave with a greater sensitivity to what it means to act in an ethical manner. He said during a luncheon on April 2 that the tasks of a compliance officer are not just about what a person knows, but how they use that knowledge in their position.
He went over the main parts of the NCCO Code of Ethics, which are knowledge, loyalty, confidentiality and how "ethics establishes a standard of doing what ought to be done.""We are providing professional services to benefit our membership, and the efforts we are undertaking are extremely rewarding," he said.On the other hand, he said, compliance officers are held responsible for adherence to a vast array of laws, regulations and opinions.Jokingly, Eisenberg remarked eight words a compliance offer could tire of saying are, "I wouldn't do that if I were you."
