If Ed and Nancy are the coaches of this operation, their son Paul is the quarterback.
...
"I think this was the seventh annual this year," Paul said."Too bad the Bears have won just twice in that time."
What started as a family trip to Soldier Field has blossomed into a full-blown production.
"My brother-in-law had some friends get together a few times and car pool to the game."Paul said."It fizzled out after that, so we decided to rent a school bus one year and it took off after that."
But not without a few rule changes. The trip was once consider a male-bonding experience, with no women allowed.
But as lifestyles changed and the trip's attendance began to slip, Paul recognized the need for change.
"Having a crowd of just 16 show up one year quickly ended the "men only" trip," Paul said.
...
"We rented a school bus the first couple of years," Paul said.
...
With food, parking and bus rental, Paul estimates this season's trip cost about $750.
...
"The front or end of a line of buses and RVs is key," Paul said.
...
Meanwhile, Paul and his parents begin the cooking.
This is where all the prep work comes in handy.Tables full of snacks and food serve as appetizers for the main course - brats and burgers simmering on a 55-gallon drum grill.
"My parents make sure I have everything written on my list," Paul said.
...
Paul and his friends gather around the keg, swapping stories of tailgate parties past.
"Two years ago during the Bears' playoff season, we went to the Cleveland game - which was the second straight game Mike Brown intercepted a pass in overtime and returned it for a touchdown," Paul said.
...
For Paul, it's decision time.He has tickets to the game, but chooses instead to hang out at the tailgate site.
"I've gone in a few times," Paul said.
...
"Last year I thought the group would diminish because of the long trip to Champaign," Paul said.
...
"It was fun, but after the 11th or 12th rendition of "The Flintstones," it can be a bit much," Paul said.
