Dr. Andrew Eisenberg , a family physician in private practice in Madisonville , Texas , who attended the workshop , said poor compliance in population pockets in inner city and remote rural areas led to Texas' low ranking. The expense of vaccinations coupled with the fact that many insurance programs will not pick up the cost is a problem for some. Immunizations from a family practitioner or a pediatrician for the first year of a child's life alone can cost nearly $400 , Eisenberg said. In addition , the number of vaccinations and the recommended frequency of inoculation has changed several times during the last decade , leading to confusion about what shot needs to be given and when , he said. Eisenberg supports the implementation of a statewide immunization registry that would make it easier for physicians and public health officials to track an individual immunization record. There is a tremendous amount of documentation and paperwork involved in maintaining vaccination records , he said. And in some places , people actually sell forged immunization documents.. Eisenberg said some people have become complacent about getting their children vaccinated because they haven't seen major epidemics of diseases such as measles or mumps. In the Madisonville area , there are better vaccination rates for cows and dogs than for children , he said. Parents often think everybody else is vaccinating their children , so their own child is safe , he said. But vaccination is meant to treat a population , not an individual..
