No doubt the idea is an excellent one. As General Manager of our hometown TV station, a pastor friend and I started a 2 hour long music video program that aired M-F from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on our station. I wanted to do SG but my pastor friend was more into Contemporary Christian music so we went in that direction. To start we basically had to "steal" music videos off of some other satellite programs.

I wish Jim well in his efforts to help groups put out some quality stuff. Quality again will be the key word. I've received tapes from many groups that appear to have been shot with a home camera with little or no editing, poor lighting and more. I too do not understand why Christian Music in general lags so far behind when we should be leading the pack with what we have to offer. It's going to take some BIG MONEY to step up and take the lead and I pray that day comes soon. I too have my own video equipment and do various video productions. My dream is to one day be involved in a Christain film.

Jim our prayers are with you and The Academy of Gospel Music will help in anyway that we can. Be Blest!

I agree with you, Jim. I love the SG videos because they are done like the concerts. It's like having my own private concert in my home whenever I want. Concept videos are okay for maybe one special song during the live concert but not exclusively.
    ...
Jim, you obviously haven't seen very many concept videos then. A concept video basically puts the words of the song into video form.

When one says the we always follow the world, it makes me wonder how they would run their business. You see, though we sing this great music to minister, we also have to run it like a business, and this means marketing it the best way possible. Besides, according to the GREAT COMISSION, our goal is to GO INTO ALL THE WORLD and preach the gospel. What better tool to use to "get folks the message" than our music in form of a video? You may not like them, but that doesn't mean that they cannot work to touch lives or even save souls.

Again, my 2 cents worth. I have nothing against concert videos, I prefer concept videos, but each one of us will like on or the other better, we all have our likes and dislikes.

Some of the reasons I want to make gospel music videos are:

Concept videos have been popular in secular music since the mid-1980s, when MTV and VH1 initially became successful. The CMT stuff followed a few years later when Country really began booming.

A video channel was introduced for Christian contemporary music in the early 1990s called "Z-Music," but it flopped due to lack of variety.

Jim, I realize that we are to be in the world but not of the world, but at the same time, the wisdom that God has given in these last days can be used by Christians too. We don't still trade chickens for work or cow for other debts, but we have come to use the banking system of the world. We don't still dress in robes and drive chariots, but wear modern clothes and drive cars. In the same respect we need to keep up with modern inventions that help us to further the Gospel. Good concept videos can be very effective in getting the message of the Gospel across. BTW, my Dad always told me that the real holy roller was the one who turned the alarm off on Sunday mornings and rolled back over in bed to go back to sleep, so I doubt that you fit that category.... LOL
    ...
I must wish Jim all the best in his endeavors to produce concept video's and my prayers are with you.

I can't speak for Jim and the equipment he will be using but even at our small station a camera will cost about 10 thousand dollars, a tape deck about 8 thousand and a computer editing system to edit out the tapes costs about 10 thousand. On the other side, a well known network station probably uses cameras that cost upwards of 50-150 thousand dollars and edit on a system that could cost 100-200 thousand or more. Thats just video equipment. Lots of concept style videos are shot on film and that just keeps the price so prohibitive. Here again its like which came first the chicken or the egg. Gospel Music Television plays Southern Gospel video's. I admit it's been awhile since I watched but when I did they were repeating songs about every 4 hours in many cases that I recall.
