Dr. Michael Eighan of the Rose Center for Women who also practices at Doctors Hospital, said mammograms remain a "useful tool" until a "more precise way is found eventually."

    ...
"They clearly have their place," Eighan added.

While doctors may argue that the controversial Danish research is too much too soon, they also admit that mammograms may one day be a test of the past.

    ...
Eighan said a woman's family history also remains a useful tool in detection.

"It generates two answers – a five-year risk factor and a lifetime risk factor," he said, noting he recommends some women look at preventive measures if their risk factor is high enough.

Health officials fear the controversy could be all some women need to hear to discourage them from having a mammogram.

    ...
Eighan said many women use the "ostrich approach" to breast cancer, especially if they have had an uncomfortable experience with mammograms in the past.

Other than the procedure being slightly uncomfortable for the patient, there are no other drastic side affects.
