Bunbury Agricultural Society president Adrian Egan, an emeritus professor of agriculture and environmental science at the University of Melbourne, said WA people did not pay enough for water and the cost increase would encourage people to use water more responsibly.

And he said short term water shortages while the State waited for the desalination plan to come online in 2011 were an opportunity to introduce innovative ways to save water including water recycling and introducing fitness for purpose principals.

Mr Egan said price increases needed to be spread across residential, industrial and agricultural customers, with residential use only accounting for between five and seven per cent of total water consumption.

Future water prices for Aqwest are expected to be approved by the water minister by late June.
