After graduating with Honours at the University of Queensland, Dr Egan trained in histopathology at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.He then held the position of Fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA for one year, where he developed an interest in urological and pulmonary pathology.

Dr Egan joined Melbourne Pathology in early 1998, and was appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer in March 2001.He has recently completed an MBA at Melbourne Business School.
