The turning of the leaves is one of nature's great wonders, said Rachel Edelstein, director of public programs at the Arboretum at Flagstaff.

"So many people (in Arizona) have grown up in areas with seasons and fall colors, and want to share that with their children. So they come to Flagstaff or other areas with color in the fall," she said.

In addition to scads of aspen, the area boasts gorgeous shrubs, said Edelstein.

She noted a few - three-leaf sumac (gold and red), choke cherries (bright red), currants and box elder (golden).

Edelstein calls the Weatherford Trail, which starts at Schultz Tank, a "sweet fall hike" that goes through a dense stand of aspen.

After a long day of work at the Arboretum at Flagstaff, Rachel Edelstein showed up at my office.I led her back to my computer and I clicked on the photographs of mushrooms I had captured during last year's Monsoon season. The mushrooms had an aesthetic to them, and I thought they prove to be perfect images for a mushroom hunter story we planned to run.

Edelstein studied the mushrooms for a moment."I can't identify these very easily," she said."I can't really see the gills.I'd need a few hours and some time to cross-reference."She further explained, patiently, that the gilled mushrooms are largely ignored by collectors because of the chance they might be poisonous, and they typically are not the coveted ones â€" not like morels or king boletes.
