3. Empty nest speaks volume Oval great room, domed ceiling focal point for Long Grove home

The great room is the most important architectural feature of the home, said Len Eckhoff, a member of the design team with Orren Pickell Designers & Builders in Bannockburn.
If the two-story room had a squared rather than rounded ceiling, the height and volume would have overwhelmed people in the room, said the architect.
"The ceiling should be in proportion to the size of the floor plan," Eckhoff said.
The room is 15 by 20 feet, and the 18-foot ceiling starts curving into its oval dome at about the 12-foot height, he said.
The homeowners, who asked that their name not be used, wanted the home's main room to be a multipurpose room, not a formal, traditional living room that was seldom used.
In the same vein, they did not want a formal mantel on the fireplace.
...
- The home measures somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 square feet, Eckhoff said.
While it has as many rooms as a traditional family house, the difference is that the home office and the second-floor loft shared by the bedrooms for the adult children are extra rooms, not the core or starting point for the design.
"That seems to be the trend - less of the formal living room and more importance of the family room that is part of the kitchen, breakfast room and keeping area," he said."That's the main area of the house where the family hangs out."
