Beth Dyke, of the Greeneville Police Department, has been involved in investigating child abuse cases for many years.

Dyke acknowledged that at times the emotional turmoil involved in the job can almost be too much to bear.

"Sometimes you just want to throw your hands up in the air and say, ‘I can't work these anymore,'" she said.

After several years in the business, Dyke said these types of cases can "really try you and work on you after awhile."

"Often at times when you're ready to throw your hands up, though, something will happen and you're back in there," she said.

The motivation, she explained, is "if you can be positive in somebody's life. . . if you can make a difference.

"We've had kids come back and tell us later on, ‘Thanks for helping me,'" Dyke said.
