Melniczek, formerly Amanda Dye, was Main Street Radford's executive director from 2003 to 2005.Then she worked at Virginia Tech's Center for Regional Strategies.

But she missed working with children, she said. She was a volunteer for an after-school program for four years at Emory & Henry College and worked for two summers with an Upward Bound program.

She said there are after-school care places for elementary schoolchildren, and high school students can be on their own, but there had been few after-school opportunities for middle schoolers.

"It's that in-between age," she said.

Amanda Dye, executive director of MSR, explains the contest as a combination of a challenge to businesses to show their holiday spirit and a chance for Radford shoppers to discover their city's downtown business district.

"Main Street Radford has challenged businesses located on Main Street to display their own representation of the holidays in their windows and store fronts," said Dye.
    ...
Dye said the combination of the Festival of Lights and an increased pride in Radford's downtown area has led to a fantastic effort by the businesses to beautify Main Street for the holiday season.

"This year, the window decorating contest has been enhanced by the festival of lights decorations on the city streetscape," Dye said."More businesses are participating in the contest and many have added new lights, decorations, and some have great themes for their windows."

And that means good things for the city's retailers, Dye added.

"The combination of decorated storefronts and city lights make Radford a more desirable place to shop this holiday season," she said.

"There is no better way to start off the holiday season," added Dye.

Empty display windows and For Rent signs reflect a challenging situation on Radford's East Main Street where, according to Main Street Radford's Amanda Dye, about 15 percent to 20 percent of the commercial property is vacant.

"I think Keith opening up is going to be another piece of the puzzle, part of our niche market, building a reputation of having a wide selection of specialty shops," she said. She added that there are plans for other businesses to fill vacant buildings later this year."Things are looking up."
