While students are in charge, math teacher Donna Duvall-Serrano is the engine that keeps the credit union going.
She became interested in the idea of a student-run credit union while teaching at a parochial school in Honolulu in the early 1980s.She ran that credit union for two years before moving to Denver in 1983.
Within a week of starting her new job at Kent, she was approaching the headmaster, who was supportive.Duvall-Serrano started knocking on credit-union doors.
"Some said, 'Absolutely not.' Some laughed at me and said, 'Are you kidding?' " Duvall-Serrano said.
Finally, she was greeted with enthusiasm by managers at the federal credit union at the former Lowry Air Force Base.
...
"It's such a neat thing to do," said Duvall-Serrano, 57.
