Tyler spent most of his working career with the family business, R. B. Dunning & Company, until 1983 when he went into property management then into the restaurant business, managing and owning restaurants in Northeast Harbor, Bar Harbor and Orono.Presently he works three days per week for Maine Tourism Association as a Travel Counselor.

He was active in the Town of Veazie where he served as a selectman for a few terms.He was on the budget committee, president of elderly housing and a member of the Police Department as well as other committees in the town.He was also a member of the Greater Bangor Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Restaurant Association and a trustee of Eastern Maine Healthcare.

His Masonic affiliations include membership in St. Andrew's Lodge No. 83 AF & AM of Bangor and the Maine Consistory of Portland, Bangor Council #5, Mt. Moriah Royal Arch Chapter #6 and St. John's Commandery #3 of Bangor.He became a member of Anah Temple at a Joint Ceremonial with Kora Temple in 1981.Tyler and Frank Jordan formed the Keystone Kops Unit in 1982.
