   The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association is proud to announce that Jim Dunn has been selected as the 2004 Cowboy of the Year.
   
   The award, which is sponsored by the Douglas Lake Ranch, is given annually to the cowboy or cowgirl that has shown exceptional ability, sportsmanship, appearance, personality and contributions to the betterment of the sport of rodeo.
   
   James Lorne Dunn was born September 17, 1955 in Calgary, and called Balzac, AB home during his competing years. Like many others he got his start in a little britches rodeo, riding cows at the age of 15.
   
   A master of consistency, Dunn qualified for 19 consecutive Canadian Finals Rodeo appearances as a bareback rider (1976-1994).
   
   In his rookie year of 1976, Dunn was named the CRCA's (now CPRA) Rookie of the Year, and not only did he qualify for the Canadian Finals as a bareback rider that year, he made it as a bull rider, too.
   
   During his professional career he racked up three Canadian bareback championships, in 1980, 1985, and 1986, and qualified for the NFR six times. He was also the Calgary Stampede $50,000 bonus winner in 1983.
   
   A former president of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, Dunn has always valued the people in rodeo, and the friendships he's formed.
   
   "[Rodeo] still means a lot to me," he said in a 1998 interview. "When I started, I didn't have much except a van and a riggin' bag."
   
   Dunn was also inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2002.
   
   Continuing a lifetime of commitment to the sport of rodeo, he now works as a Wrangler Pro Official with the CPRA.
