Consumers demand it even when they don't know what it is, said Dina Dunn, vice president of marketing for Nylstar Inc., the US arm of the big Italian nylon producer. "When they think of microfiber, all they think of is soft."
The same softness, combined with the easy care of synthetic fiber and yarn, has made microfiber popular not only in nylon lingerie and sportswear but also in men's and women's woven polyester pants and skirts. But with microfiber no longer a high-end specialty, manufacturers are faced with appealing to a maturing market. At the same time, they're trying to distinguish their products from a near glut of commodity microfiber. "We've been doing our best to create newness and innovation so we can separate not only ourselves but our customers versus the commodity products coming out of Asia," said Ms. Dunn.
