Dr. Bernard J. Dunn will receive an honorary doctor of science degree and Janene Pennel will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree.
In 1959, Dr. Dunn founded with two fellow physicists the BDM Corporation, an engineering and scientific analysis company that was sold after 30 years of operation to Ford Motor Company.
As president and later chief scientist of BDM International, Dunn directed the company's systems analysis studies and operations research activities for government agencies and the private sector. A long term board member of Shenandoah University, he is particularly devoted to Shenandoah's School of Pharmacy which bears the name of his father who was a practicing pharmacist in New York City.
Pennel's professional and volunteer life has been devoted to teaching children. In the 1960s and 1970s, she taught some of the poorest children in the state of Tennessee. She also taught at Memphis State University and the University School of Nashville.
