   Thomas was employed as a supervisor with the U.S. Post Office , retiring in 1975 , and he was the former president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling , golf and playing horseshoes.
   
   Thomas is survived by his wife , Rita Hoch-Dunleavy of Duluth ; three sons , Andrew and his wife , Karin , of Wayzata , Thomas and his wife , Jeanie , of New Hope , Patrick and his wife , Gloria , of Coon Rapids ; one daughter , Julie Sundin and her husband , Darcey , of Duluth ; stepchildren Robert Hoch and his wife , Shirley , of Grand Rapids , Mich. , Dana Hoch and his wife , Marg , and James Hoch and his wife , Rita , both of St. Petersburg , Fla. , and Richard Hoch and his wife , Sharon , of Duluth ; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   
   He was preceded in death by his parents ; his wife , Ruth Elsie ; and sister Miriam McKenna.
