Airbus will install equipment and software necessary to receive Tenzing's services on an Airbus Corporate Jetliner and an A340-600 in the next few months, said Stuart Dunleavy, director of global roaming services with Tenzing. Retrofitting of Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft already in service is due to begin this fall, he said.

Tenzing has conducted several in-flight trials of its service, including one of more than six months with Air Canada. The company has also signed deals with Cathay Pacific Airways, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Airways, each of which will begin equipping its aircraft for Tenzing's services later this year, according to Tenzing.

Tenzing intends to use L-band transponders on existing satellites to deliver e-mail and other Internet services to aircraft passengers in flight.

Boeing Co. of Seattle, which is developing a similar service dubbed Connexion, on June 13 announced financing and preferred-provider deals with three major U.S. airlines -- Delta, United and American. Connexion is slated for availability in 2002.

Stuart Dunleavy , director of global roaming business at Tenzing , said that service users will not directly experience the lag associated with such slow speeds. Travelers will plug into a LAN ( local area network ) on the plane that can retrieve Web pages and e-mail very fast because the data is stored in an on-board Web server that updates itself constantly.

The only delay that might occur is in waiting for e-mail responses and for Web pages that contain time-sensitive content such as news , stock quotes and sport scores , since the on-board server updates its content roughly every 15 minutes.

Although both companies focus their attention on the business traveler , some travel analysts question if the in-flight Internet service will take off among mainstream consumers.
