Pat Dunleavy
...
Pat Dunleavy is a sports-specific physiotherapist and was one of the first to join the English Institute for Sport when it began employing full-time physiotherapists in 2003.He is contracted to work as the lead physiotherapist for the swimming team.
A keen swimmer himself, he knew early on in his physio career, this was the sport he wanted to specialise in. However, like all Olympic physios, he knew he had to gain multi-sports experience, and while working as a physio in the Navy, he volunteered for different athletics clubs and football and rugby teams.
Mr Dunleavy's first move into his specialism was with the British swimming junior squad, which he started working for on a part-time basis in 1992.Then just before a deadline for a postgraduate diploma dissertation, he got a phone call from the British swimming senior squad, asking if he would go away with them for a competition.
,It was my first chance of working with the senior team, so I stayed up all night doing my dissertation. You have to be able to drop tools and be available at any possible chance , that chance (eventually) led me to the Olympics.' But this was not before he had worked with the team on the Commonwealth and World games, while also helping a local swimming club and working in a private physio practice.
His top tip is persistence and a degree of self-sacrifice. ,You have got to start at ground level. -
