HARTSVILLE , The Hartsville Museum is undertaking an expansion of sorts, but museum director Kathy Dunlap said it's not the type of expansion one might think it is. "People keep asking, how much bigger does the museum need to be?" she said. "I don't consider it an expansion. It's more of an addition to enable us to better do our jobs." The addition is what will be called the Hartsville Museum Annex across the street from the existing museum. It would be a temperature- and humidity-controlled storage location for exhibits and artifacts that aren't being used at the gallery. The gallery will remain where it is at the former post office location. "We wouldn't think about moving out of this beautiful building," Dunlap said.

Dunlap said the museum foundation purchased the space for the annex in 2005 and gave the building to the city back then. So far, both roofs have been taken off the annex location and replaced. The goal is to gut both buildings and renovate them to be sufficient for preserving weather-sensitive artifacts. The annex not only will be a storage house with a 1,640-square-foot changing exhibit hall, but it also will have restrooms, a collections management work area, a receptions area and a research room. The renovations will include new floors, new heating and air systems, restrooms, plumbing and new walls. The project will cost $450,000, and Dunlap said she hopes the city will back the project with a $200,000 commitment. Dunlap and John Nichols, chairman of the Hartsville Museum Commission, asked the council for its support at the November council meeting. -
