   STOCKTON -- George Dunlap, a top prosecutor for San Joaquin County, has been fired over an allegation that he improperly represented the district attorney's office in a case involving his former girlfriend.
   
   Dunlap had been on administrative leave for two weeks amid an internal investigation into whether he committed an ethics violation.

   When the insurance fraud case came to court in June, Dunlap was among a group of attorneys in the Stockton courtroom, and he told the judge that the case had been dismissed.
   
   Deputy District Attorney Lester Fleming, Dunlap's supervisor, said Dunlap had an obvious conflict of interest.

   Dunlap was unavailable for comment Friday.
   
   He can appeal his termination to the county's Civil Service Commission or put the matter in the hands of an arbitrator, County Counsel Terry Dermody said. Most often, employees who are fired choose arbitration, he said.
   
   Dunlap joined the district attorney's office 16 years ago. Two years ago, he prosecuted serial killer Louis Peoples, convicted in four murders and sentenced to death.
   
   But amid Dunlap's successes have been troubles with his driving record.
   
   In 1995, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving after he ran a red light in San Francisco, where he had gone on a private trip.

   The California Highway Patrol investigated the incident and found no conclusive evidence that Dunlap had been drinking before driving.
   
   Fleming said he was saddened to see Dunlap fired.

   George Hall Dunlap Jr., 43, a former top San Joaquin County prosecutor, was also convicted of misdemeanor driving under the influence nine years ago in San Francisco. It was one of three vehicle accidents Dunlap was involved in over an 11-year period, two of them involving alcohol, according to published reports.
   
   Dunlap started as a Santa Cruz County prosecutor Oct. 18, District Attorney Bob Lee said.

   After his termination two years ago, Dunlap appealed his termination but lost due to "an appearance of impropriety," Lee said.
