THE WAY WE WERE - Claud C. Dunlap , president of Eastern Oklahoma A&M College , died in a McAlester hospital November 11 , 1951 , after suffering a heart attack earlier in the day
He , with Mrs. Dunlap and Dean and Mrs. I.C. Gunning was motoring to Quinton when he was stricken. He was rushed back to Wilburton where a local physician treated him. He was then rushed to the hospital where he died upon arrival.
Mr. Dunlap was a native of LeFlore County and was prominent in state educational circles for many years. He was born March 15 , 1894 , in the small community of Kennedy , north of Red Oak.
He was graduated from Red Oak High School in 1913 ; attended Oklahoma Baptist University from 1915 to 1917 ; the University of Glasgow , Scotland , for four months ; obtained his bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern in 1923 , and a master of arts degree from Oklahoma University in 1929.
He was superintendent of Red Oak High School from 1919 until 1922 ; director of extension at Southeastern from 1923 to 1933 ; rural school supervisor at Southeastern in 1931-32 ; a member of the faculty of that school from 1933-35 ; and director of vocational guidance at Durant and assistant state director of the National Youth Association from 1935-37.
He had been president of the college since 1937. He was a member of the First Baptist Church ; a veteran of World War I with two years active duty in the Army ; was past president of the Wilburton Lions Club and past disrict commander of the American Legion.
