   "I'm sure back in 1891, when he founded the business, my great-grandfather [James H. Dunklin] never thought this hardware store would last over one hundred years and be entering its third century of operation," says Greenville Hardware's present owner, James H. "Jimmy" Dunklin IV. Dunklin took over the business over a decade ago, and until recently, served as its manager. Then he became president of People's Bank and Trust in late 2003. Rumors immediately began circulating that an era and those trademark red doors would close. "Absolutely not", Dunklin said.
   
   Eight decades of hardware know-how Even though Dunklin moved to a new career phase, just down Commerce Street, it's "business as usual" at his family's hardware store, he said. "I have a great staff at the store," Dunklin said.

   "We once had a very strong agricultural business climate here," Dunklin said. "My great-granddad sold plenty of plow points and mule collars in his day. Nowadays, it's almost zero agricultural and nearly one hundred percent industrial supply, so that's what we cater to." Learning to adapt is key to business survival these days, he said. "You have to make changes along the way to survive as a business," Dunklin said.

   Dunklin is confident his family business will continue to be a thriving part of downtown Greenville for years to come. "I always tell people, 'This store was here a long time before I was and I believe it will still be here when I am gone,'" he said firmly.
