Pat and Pete Dunford
...
The two owner-operators , Pete and Pat Dunford , and the store itself, have become very important and valued to the community.
Pete Dunford was born in the old Nicols hospital in Peterborough and spent his first year in the family home on Dunfords Road , which is situated across the road from the Big Cedar Country Store and leads down to Stoney Lake. When Pete was two years of age his parents moved to Peterborough and he grew up and was educated in that city. His summers however, were spent with his grandparents on Stoney Lake and his love for the area has remained throughout his life. After graduating from high school in Peterborough he took a position with the Bata Shoe Company and remained with them for 14 years. Pete then spent another 14 years in the shoe business with the Kinney Shoe Company and when he left them to return to the Big Cedar area he held the position of Corporate Director of Personnel.
In 1988 the Dunfords , then living in Pickering , bought the store which they now operate and moved back to our area. Shortly after their purchase Pete joined a baseball team known as the Dirty Dozen and through this team became associated with what was then called the South Burleigh Athletic Association. This organization has evolved into the currently very active Wilson Park Community Association. Pete has served as President of the WPCA and was instrumental in securing funding to erect the original building. The Community Centre since its opening has continued to be an extremely important and well used facility. He remains active in the Centre and still maintains a position on its Board Of Directors. In 2001, in recognition of his long service and outstanding contributions to the community he was awarded the County of Peterborough Award of Recognition of Business Leadership.
Community service is not confined to Pete and Pat as both their children and husbands are active volunteers in North Kawartha . Karen and her husband Darrell Linton moved to Big Cedar in 1988 , and Darrell is active in the community and serves as a Volunteer Firefighter with the North Kawartha Fire Department.

The original store was established in 1952 but has changed considerably over the past 50 years. Pete and Pat are the fourth owners and have now operated the business for 14 years.

Pete and Pat are two people who have made and are continuing to make a positive difference in our Township.
