Kenyan authorities began fighting back in January with their biggest-ever marketing campaign in Europe, spending the equivalent of about $6 million on television, billboard and poster advertising. Half the money came from the European Union.
The number of hits on the KTB Web site shot up by 183 percent in January, according to Dunford. "It was a good indication that the promotion was paying off because with that came renewed bookings," she said.
