   Chief Mark Dunford, who has served our community as a member of the Carolina Beach Police Department since 1987, is this week's ‘People of Pleasure Island.' This dedicated and caring individual, who will be retiring from his position as the Chief of Police in Carolina Beach on October 1, 2003 has committed the last 16 years of his life to serving the citizens of Carolina Beach. Chief Dunford was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Southport, North Carolina when he was 14 years old. He began his law enforcement experience while he was in the United Stated Air Force, which he began in 1966. During his tenure in the Air Force, Chief Dunford was stationed in Amarillo, Texas; Michigan and Galena, Alaska. "Galena was the closest fighter base to Russia," stated Chief Dunford, who started his Air Force career as a mechanic and cross-trained as a member of the security police.
