Fans should not be surprised at the sight of metal detectors and uniformed officers at the gates, said Gastonia Police Capt. Steven Duncan. The same bans and rules that applied last year are still in effect this year.

Officers are sometimes asked to patrol the parking lot during games, Duncan said. School bans on alcohol, tobacco and drugs are still in place, Duncan said.

"We don't want to arrest anyone, but we also want to head off any problems before they start and that's one way of doing it," Duncan said.

It's best to leave loose change or anything else made of metal at home, Duncan said.

"Officers have to screen everyone and that will get you hung up at the gate," Duncan said.
