ParaBody was founded in 1980 by Jerry Dettinger and Steve Duncan in Minneapolis, Minn.
...
So with a little start-up money from Duncan, Dettinger's pick-up truck, an orange hacksaw and an old Lincoln welder, the 19-year-olds set up shop in Dettinger's garage and began making heavy-duty weight lifting benches.
They named the company after its first products, "PowRBody" benches, which were the first benches to offer five exercises in one unit. They were sold to bodybuilders and would-be bodybuilders through mail order and a half a dozen dealers across the country.
The company sold $70,000 in products its first year in business and soon added the "Hercules" to its product line. This 12-station multi-bench system was a breakthrough for weight lifters because it combined the versatility of numerous stations with the heavy-duty strength of a workhorse bench.
