Mississauga mother Kristen Duncan is a WeeHands instructor who has taught Sign With Your Baby programs at Gymboree.Duncan, who taught her daughter Jillian to sign at 9 months, currently teaches the Signing For The Holidays program, a condensed four-week course that costs $70.
"Generally babies always use hand movements to communicate," said Duncan."Signing is just taking what babies naturally do and having parents watch for what it is their baby is telling them."
In the Signing For The Holidays program parents are given a manual that lists theme-based signs and holiday songs. Each class Duncan teaches up to 20 theme-based signs that are important to infants, such as food and toys.Duncan recommends that parents pick basic signs to teach their babies at home and repeat these signs to their infants, particularly during meal time.
"When your baby is sitting in the highchair they are making eye contact and are focused on you," said Duncan, "so this is a good time to review signs."
Signing is particularly useful when babies become mobile and inquisitive as toddlers.
"Signing helps knock out those terrible 2's," said Duncan.
