Eaglecrest would receive 5 percent of the $115 per person fee, which Eaglecrest Ski Area Manager Kirk Duncan estimated would easily mean $35,000 in annual revenue for Eaglecrest.

That's about 5 percent of the money Eaglecrest receives from the city, which covers about 30 percent of the ski area's total operating budget, said Duncan.

Board members said they are "under the gun" to make Eaglecrest as financially independent as possible.

"The Assembly has made it very clear they want to see additional revenue from Eaglecrest, specifically in the summer," said Duncan.

Duncan said he has the authority to issue the permit himself, but wanted to give the public an opportunity to comment.

Prices are going to go up," Kirk Duncan, general manager, said.

Early-bird passes will be either $349 or $399, up from $299 last year.A day pass could remain at $34 or be bumped up to $35, he said.

"Now we have no reserve," Duncan said.

Duncan said other city-owned operations have millions of dollars of reserves.Eaglecrest has operated at a slight loss in the past, and Duncan said those overseeing the area hoped to build a reserve of $500,000 to $1 million for development opportunities or low-snow years.

"We're not padding our pockets," he said.

Additionally, inflation-driven pay increases and the rising cost of diesel fuel to operate the lifts account for the increase, Duncan said.

Eaglecrest General Manager, Kirk Duncan, said that "We are going to do the refurbishment and the repainting and anything we need to do over the winter, so that will be good and we're actually saving considerable amount of money because we don't have to convert them over to diesel direct driving and then back to electric, so we anticipate that this is very, very good thing for Eaglecrest all the way around."

For a project with no specific timeline, the new lift construction and summit access road are "going well," said Kirk Duncan, general manager of Eaglecrest.

But a lot of work remains at the city-owned ski hill this summer.Duncan said the ski area is going through its largest construction and expansion period ever.

Duncan expects the road to reach the summit, power lines from North Douglas Highway to reach the ski area's base and the new beginner chairlift to be complete before the snow flies. However, the mid-mountain chairlift is a different story.

Ar,te Construction won the city bid to erect lift towers and build the top and bottom wheelhouse terminals, but Duncan's people will string the cable and install the chairs.

Duncan said he's not sure it can be done by the next season.

"We've got a month of work after the contractors are done," Duncan said.

Duncan's staff will keep working until the ski season starts in early December and their direction changes to lifting skiers to the top and grooming runs again.

"We want Mt. Sima to continue to operate and provide a valuable service to the residents of Whitehorse in future years" said Eaglecrest General Manager Kirk Duncan. "We feel it is in the best interest of all ski areas to have as many successful ski areas as possible. Eaglecrest feels by helping Mt. Sima through this temporary problem will help insure its long-term success. We don't want the residents of Whitehorse to get out of the habit of skiing and snowboarding. In addition, this may be a very good way to fill up some hotel rooms and restaurants". According to Duncan "Eaglecrest is not only an asset to Juneau but to all of Southeast and portions of Canada as well.

The towers themselves weigh several thousand pounds and are up to 42 feet tall, General Manager Kirk Duncan said.

The new double chairlift should be able to haul 1,200 people an hour, a significant improvement over the Ptarmigan's chairlifts' 800 an hour, Duncan said. The new lift runs 4,500 feet long and climbs 1,100 vertical feet, terminating at the same elevation as Ptarmigan.

While it won't open up any new terrain, the new lift starts at a higher elevation where snow more readily accumulates, potentially letting the ski area open earlier in the season or in more marginal conditions, Duncan said.

Ski area manager Kirk Duncan says the Ptarmigan chair lift will be open between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The area will then close until Thursday.

The budgeted opening was set for last weekend, but there wasn't enough snow at the time.

Duncan says crews will be making snow all week, so a full opening is anticipated next weekend.
