The avalanche of school papers headed your way can be tamed by designating a box for each child's papers - all of them for the entire year, including newsletters, flyers, returned assignments and tests, advises Ms. Dukate.Being nearby when kids are doing homework is also beneficial, she adds.

"Teach them the value of hard work and perseverance, that you can get smart by learning to be a problem-solver," says Ms. Dukate.

"Our children love this special unit and don't even realize how much they are learning about the world," said Mrs. Dukate.

"In Ukraine, an important part of Christmas is about their ancestors.In my family, we visit my Grandma Pat in Ohio and all the cousins are there and sometimes we do a craft together.It's an important time to be with all of my family," said second-grader Kassidy Schroeder, explaining how she thinks Christmas is similar all over the world.

But Principal Linda Dukate sent Mrs. Ortiz to a conference on service learning grants at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, and Mrs. Ortiz shot a little higher than the mini grant.

Linda Dukane, principal of Temperance Road Elementary School, agrees that the specifics in the GLEC guidelines will provide the teachers with a better picture of what the state expects the students to know.Armed with that information, they will be prepared to create in-depth.

"I'm excited that we're going to make our standards more specific," Dukane said.

The change was made in part to concentrate efforts to a specific time of year.

"We definitely look closer at substitute teachers that have been in our building when it comes to hiring," said Temperance Road Elementary Principal Linda Dukate, who's been Ms. Bateson's supervisor for the last five months.
