Mark Driscoll Rejects McLaren But Embraces Contemplative
    ...
Note from Pastor Kevin Lea: Mark Driscoll is a very popular pastor in the Seattle area (about 15 miles from us across the water of Puget Sound).
    ...
Since last Fall, when Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church, denounced some of the teachings of emerging church leaders Brian McLaren and Doug Pagitt at the Convergence Conference at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, his talk has been the topic of many discussions across North America.
    ...
A "Recommended Reading List" on Driscoll's website shows that Driscoll resonates with contemplative and emerging church leaders who teach and adhere to eastern-style meditation.
    ...
For instance, Driscoll includes three books by contemplative/centering prayer advocate Larry Crabb.
    ...
While Driscoll does not include The Papa Prayer in his list of books, this raises a valid question: Is it ok to promote some of the books by those who propagate mystical spirituality as long as those particular books don't?
    ...
Once again though, Driscoll says that these books help bring people closer to Jesus.
    ...
Driscoll also recommends Brother Lawrence's book, The Practice of the Presence of God.
    ...
It makes sense that Driscoll has also included Essential Kierkegaard in his list.
    ...
Mark Driscoll is no exception. On more than one occasion, he has spoken negatively about those who want to talk about eschatology. On his website, he states:

We are not eschatological Theonomists or Classic Dispensationalists (e.g. Scofield) and believe that divisive and dogmatic certainty surrounding particular details of Jesus Second Coming are unprofitable speculation, because the timing and exact details of His return are unclear to us.

Driscoll backs up this view as can be seen on a YouTube session where Driscoll says those eschatology-minded Christians who come to his church are not welcomed there. In Driscoll's book (a title included in his "Recommended Reading List"), Confessions of a Reformissional Rev, Driscoll mocks the idea of a rapture for believers and a one-world government with an Anti-christ who makes people wear a mark to buy, sell or trade (pp. 49-50).He added that this kind of end-time "mission" was not a message from Jesus but rather one "concocted from a cunning Serpent."

The reason we bring up Driscoll's distain for end-time perspectives is because there is a growing connection between those who resonate with contemplative spirituality and those who say we should not think about Bible prophecy in relation to the end times.

nd-harsh-language/#comment-233875 I have been listening to Mark Driscoll lately.I love his boldness to call sin for what it is and his desire for true repentance in both believers and non-believers.I love his ability to teach the scriptures, as well.
    ...
I think that is exactly what is going on here with Pastor Driscoll.I believe Pastor Driscoll should follow Paul's advice and be an example to the believers in word, conduct, etc. Notice that the first item in this list directly relates to speech.Because Timothy would be scrutinized in this very way, he had to rise above and be a truly godly example to others, beginning in his speech.Likewise, Pastor Mark needs to rise above. And I think he knows this.He has expressed a few times the fact that though a pastor should allow for "harshness" and "scatological humor" in his sermons, it should be used very seldom, as is the pattern in the scriptures.Even if this were true, Pastor Mark does not even follow his own teaching on the frequency of this kind of talk.I have heard him say on a couple occasions, after speaking in this manner, "Oh come on.You know it's why you came. It's why you brought a friend!"He is not practicing what he preaches and admits to the (crowd gathering) shock value of his words.I do find it encouraging, though, that he has truly been giving this more and more serious thought through his own studies and under the mentorship of older godly men.I hope and believe that Pastor Driscoll will repent from his inappropriate language and desire to be an "example to the believers in word.."Grace and peace, Keith I have been listening to Mark Driscoll lately.I love his boldness to call sin for what it is and his desire for true repentance in both believers and non-believers.I love his ability to teach the scriptures, as well.

So why don't I criticize Mark? Here's how my thinking goes: What's the point of criticizing Mark?Has it not already been done by many here?Would I in any way be adding to the conversation?

It's ok that you disagree with Mark.

    ...
    2) Have any of you ever spoken to Mark Driscoll personally?
    ...
That would take courage and I know, Mark Driscoll is so scary; and it would take time; and we might find he really isn't any worse than any of us are!!!3) Have any of you who are so sure Driscoll is so wrong ever stopped to think for a moment that if Jesus were here he might actually view you like he did the Pharisees while calling guys like Driscoll to be one of his inner circle?

    1) I respect Dr. John Piper for the fact that instead of sitting from afar and lobbing mortar shells at Driscoll he has decided to be a part of the solution and has come along side him, taken him under his wing, and is mentoring him, as is CJ Mahaney and others; and as a result, Driscoll is slowly changing.He was known as the cussing pastor…while on Saturday past he publicly apologized for much from his earlier days of verbal ministry impropriety;

    2) In my mind, Dr. Piper showed great wisdom in his discipleship/mentoring of Driscoll by inviting him to speak at a conference where the focus was The Power of Words and the Wonder of God.

Recently, pastor Mark Driscoll preached a sermon on humor in his "ask anything" series. The question submitted to him asked why he made jokes about Mormons, homosexuals and others in his sermons and in the same sermon expected them to be saved.Pastor Driscoll shows in his sermon that the Bible contains a lot of humor and that humor is alright to be used.

The founder and president of Acts 29 is Mark Driscoll, named by Christianity Today as one of the most influential young preachers in America, with over a million downloads of his sermons each year. Also known by his peers as "Mark the cussing pastor," Driscoll pastors Mars Hill Church in Seattle, which he planted in 1996.

Stating that, "I myself swim in the theologically conservative stream of the Emerging Church," Driscoll claims to be "theologically conservative and culturally liberal."Regarding the use of alcohol, Driscoll writes: "My Bible study convicted me of my sin of abstinence from alcohol," at which time he "repented" and immediately began to drink alcohol.Driscoll's church website notes that the church has "beer-brewing lessons whenever a large group of [Mars Hill] men get together."This would be in keeping with Driscoll's view of Jesus, who, according to Driscoll, began His public ministry at a wedding, where He "kicks things off as a bartender."

This past New Year's Eve, Driscoll's church hosted what they called a "Red Hot New Year's Eve Bash," which included a "champagne bar" in the church (ID's were required for drinkers) and "bonus points" were offered for those whose attire was "RED hot."

Driscoll is also founder of the Paradox Theater, a ministry of Mars Hill Church, which in its first few years, hosted about 650 secular rock concerts for underage kids in Seattle.According to Driscoll, "We have had only a few minor problems [at the Paradox Theater], like the Japanese punk band that got naked during their set for no apparent reason."

Another concern about Acts 29 churches like The Journey is their "film night" ministries where secular R-rated movies are viewed and then discussed. At the Journey, four of the five most recent films that could be documented were R-rated.According to Driscoll, his church also has a film and theology event that shows "an occasional unedited R-rated movie."Driscoll also writes that some of his "sermons on sex were R-rated," and notes that he gives "warnings to parents and sometimes saw whole visiting youth groups walk out blushing halfway through the sermon."
    ...
Driscoll was scheduled to speak at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary this month, although he has stated for the record that he will "not be drinking or cussing when he speaks at the seminary."

    The "left wing"

While Driscoll has been a highly influential player among the right-wing of the Emerging Church, Brian McLaren would represent his counterpart among those who comprise the left-wing of the movement.
    ...
Driscoll has publicly stated some of his concerns about McLaren and other Emergent Village leaders which include: "referring to God as a chick, questioning God's sovereignty over , and knowledge of , the future, denial of the substitutionary atonement at the cross, a low view of Scripture, and denial of hell , ."
    ...
Driscoll has been equally critical of McLaren's call for a five-to-10-year moratorium against any pronouncements against homosexual behavior.Yet, despite Driscoll's claim that he is distancing himself from the "Emergent" stream of the Emerging Church, he is a contributing writer in a new book on the Emerging Church with some of the same leaders from Emergent Village that he has so strongly criticized for their "liberalism."
    ...
The September issue of CT offers an excellent article on the man Miller dubbed the "cussing preacher," Mark Driscoll, pastor of the 6,000-strong-and-growing non-denominational Mars Hill Church in downtown Seattle.
    ...
Driscoll, founding president of the ACTS29 church-planting network, then known for the occasional utterance of profanity also makes no bones about the compatibility of evangelical and baptistic Christianity with the consumption of alcohol.
    ...
But then there is Mark Driscoll. His Mars Hill sermons offer blunt but humor-laced conservatism, replete with the depravity of humanity, eternal punishment, and the exclusive claims of Jesus Christ as the only Savoir for sinners. In sync with the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, only men serve as pastors at Mars Hill.In a recent book, Listening to the Beliefs of the Emerging Churches: Five Perspectives, Driscoll packs over 600 Bible references into 13 pages in contrast to the culture and philosophy fixated contributions of the other emerging authors.

Any movement capable of including the likes of Driscoll and McLaren must be one complex animal to say the least.
    ...
So, are Southern Baptists and the Emerging church on a common path or a collision course? The contrast between Driscoll and McLaren drives home at least one fact we can take to the bank: if the Emerging Church includes both these men, then what unifies it cannot be theology.
    ...
Driscoll and ACTS29 are unabashedly theological, embracing a fully-orbed, orthodox, reformed and baptistic confessional statement , in the case of The Journey, the Baptist Faith and Message (2000).
    ...
Mark Driscoll now regrets being tagged "the cussing preacher."

People Against Fundamentalism Plans Protest Against Mars Hill Seattle Pastor Mark Driscoll

People Against Fundamentalism, a grassroots organization based in Seattle, Washington, has chosen Sunday, December 3, from 10-11:30am to express public opposition to the persistent degrading remarks that Mars Hill Church Pastor Mark Driscoll makes towards and about women.

The protest will be held at the Mars Hill Ballard campus (the main site for Mars Hill) at the corner of NW Leary Way and 14th Ave NW in Seattle.

Having built a megachurch of 5,000 members, Mark Driscoll's influence is growing in the community and across the nation via conferences and via the internet through his blog and podcasts. Many of us are concerned that the community may view Mark Driscoll as a legitimate or even primary spokesperson for the Christian faith because of his growing prominence, and especially because of his religion column in The Seattle Times.
    ...
Reverend Driscoll has made many comments that deny that shared humanity by objectifying and demeaning women. (See the quotes below.)

For nearly ten years many people (friends and foe) have challenged Reverend Driscoll about his attitudes and language regarding women.Nevertheless Reverend Driscoll has persisted in making demeaning and degrading comments about women from his pulpit, on his blog, and at numerous national conferences.

People Against Fundamentalism has said, "Enough!".On December 3 we will be protesting outside the Mars Hill Ballard campus to demonstrate to the people of Mars Hill and the residents of Seattle that we can no longer ignore his crass objectification of women.

Our goals for this protest are:

To expose to the city of Seattle to Reverend Driscoll's anti-women diatribe. To see Mark Driscoll removed as a religion columnist for The Seattle Times. To extract a sincere apology from Reverend Driscoll for his comments and a pledge to cease demeaning women in the future.
