According to Dr. Robert Dracker of North Area Pediatrics, within two or three weeks after the return to school, many children start developing respiratory tract infections, sore throats, and flu-like symptoms. "Probably because now the child is in close proximity with many other children," he said. If the child is taught to wash his hands after coughing or after handling something another child has just had, such as a toy or other object, the probability of the child contracting a cold or other infection could be drastically reduced, the doctor said. This year, health professionals are recommending that children receive flu shots towards the end of October, beginning of November. "If we can reduce the susceptibility, we can reduce the occurrence," Dracker said.

They say that good things come to those who wait. Dr. Robert Dracker has been waiting a long time to achieve his goals.

Dr. Robert Dracker has been waiting a long time to achieve his goals.

A few years ago, the physician attempted to create what he called a "Children's Healthcare Village" in the Town of Salina. For reasons not understood by many, his plans were thwarted by the Salina Town Board. After awhile, it became clear that whatever plans Dracker had for his medical complex, they weren't going to happen in the Town of Salina, and so he withdrew his application.

When In Good Health interviewed him in June three years ago, he was certain that somehow, he would prevail, and his medical complex would be built. Now the new center is well on its way to completion and will open sometime by the end of April. While it seemed that nothing was happening with his plans to build the children's medical center, Dracker never really let go of the project.
    ...
To improve conditions for his patients, Dracker has designed the new center to function like a hospital floor with 18 exam rooms, set up so that patients are not kept waiting. Instead, the design allows patients to be seen quickly and minimize the time spent waiting to be seen. It also includes several features to make it a more comfortable, child - friendly space. The new building is a one-story structure that will have radiant heating" so that the floors are always warm for our patients. The flooring we're using is environmentally safe and has an intrinsic anti-bacterial surface."

Dracker has also added increased air circulation to the amenities for his younger patients as well as those who frequent his Infusacare practice. "What I did was redirect my energies more toward design concept specific to the needs of patients rather than worrying about building an integrated village at this point."

With all the plans in place and building well under way, Dracker has been able to look back and see evolution of the whole process. He denies that it was ever his intent to build a children's health center to rival the one coming to Upstate Medical Center. "I never wanted to do that," he insisted.
    ...
As for the future, Dracker's West Area Pediatrics practice will remain the same although it still continues to grow. It's only the practice on Buckley Road that will move to the new location along with Infusacare, his other practice for patients in need of transfusions.
