O'Prey had actually opened the scoring with a short free, but Ronan and Paul Murphy both chipped in with scores either side of Liam Doyle's first of the evening.
    ...
Doyle then showed his class (is there a more elegant footballer in the county?) with consecutive scores, including a fine solo effort after claiming a kick-out.
    ...
The Harps were still picking up possession aplenty at midfield, but without Murtagh they lacked the power to trouble a well-organised Liatroim rearguard, while the probing of Doyle and the speed of Burns and Brown in the corners were testing the weary legs of their defence.
    ...
Then there are the wonderful individual talents of messrs Doyle and O'Prey.
    ...
Doyle was particularly eye-catching, his long stride and eye for a pass always creating space for him and his teammates - and he would get my vote for man of the match.

Liam Doyle (Down) and Barry Monaghan (Donegal) each saw yellow for an off-the-ball exchange and Rogers sent a 45 wide.
    ...
Centre forward Doyle floated over the lead point from a left-footed free on the right 25 minutes in.
    ...
Down opened a two-point gap with an excellent flowing move involving Doyle and Murtagh (who converted), and Hughes pointed off his right foot from an acute angle after bizarrely crawling through his marker's legs!
    ...
Down corner back Martin Cole had to be alert to see off Donegal's next raid and Doyle missed by a few feet in the last minute of first-half normal time.
    ...
But Doyle was on hand to clip over his second point after Donegal full back Paddy Campbell had beaten Coulter to the trademark direct delivery.
    ...
As Donegal tried to play down the clock, Doyle closed the gap to one with a 69th-minute free.Down swarmed forward desperately in search of an injury-time equalising score as a succession of Donegal players went to ground in an effort to waste time.

With the tension mounting and three extra minutes due to be played, Down were awarded a late free five minutes into injury time.It was a perfect situation for 1999 Minor winning Captain Liam Doyle but the No.11 had been substituted minutes earlier by last years winning captain James Colgan.

The main reason for this is that Liatroim's county quartet of Doyle, McCrickard, O'Prey and Rice, who were young men on that day, should now be entering their prime as footballers.
    ...
The game will probably hinge though on the key battle between Liam Doyle and Paul Shields.
    ...
Shields is a tough, aggressive customer who lets nothing past easily, while county captain Doyle is a classy, elegant footballer, who is capable of just about anything.
    ...
Doyle is the artery that links Liatroim's backs to their forwards and if Shields can keep tabs on him, the Fontenoys will need to have a good back-up plan to stay in the game.
