James Dowd to Retire From STCC
James J. Dowd, Assistant to the President at Springfield Technical Community College, will be retiring from the college at the end of this month after 29 years of dedicated service to the institution.His myriad responsibilities have included participation in the senior management team, being very active in the Total Quality movement at STCC; often serving as an ambassador for the college with outside organizations; and assisting countless students at STCC.
Dowd served for two terms on the Westfield School Committee, including three years as Vice-Chairman.He was elected to six two-year terms on the Westfield City Council and served as Council President in 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1983.He was active in the Democratic party in Westfield and served twice as Chairman of the Democratic City Committee.
Dowd was educated in the Westfield school system and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Westfield State College.He completed a doctoral degree at the University of Massachusetts in 1981.
Dowd began his career in education by teaching at Westfield Junior High School and then at East Longmeadow High School.In 1973 he became an instructor in physical science and chemistry at Springfield Technical Community College.He was appointed Director of the Individualized Learning Center at STCC and then Co-Coordinator of the STCC Career Prep program, and in 1975 became Director of Admissions.In 1977 he was appointed Acting Assistant to the President, a position in which he was confirmed in 1979, and has held ever since.
