    Sensei Jay Dotson began training in martial arts at the age of 16 at the old YMCA (formerly located at the corner of Adams and Jefferson Streets) in Muncie, Indiana, where he studied Korean Tae-Kwon-Do under the instruction of Steve Van Camp.

    In 1990 he began studying under Carl Jackson (Jackson's Karate Institute), a well-known instructor and state champion in Kumite (1980), and received his black belt in 1994.After receiving his black belt Sensei Dotson moved on to also study Bushi-Jiu-Jitsu, Eskrima/Contact Weapon Defense, Kali, and numerous other areas of defense in direct relation to his law enforcement career of more than 20 years.

    In February of 2003, Sensei Jay Dotson opened the Karate Do Academy at the Muncie Family YMCA (now at the corners of Mulberry and Howard Streets) which quickly grew from three students to seventeen in less than 6-months.

    Jay Dotson works at Ball Memorial Hospital as a security guard but also as serves as a police reserve officer.He saw the training as relevant and reassuring for those scared by the potential of a hazardous material spill.

    "A lot of policemen were always speaking about the fact that, what would we do if a train derailed and there was a tanker full of chemicals; so I thought coming out here today would be preparing me better for that event," Dotson said.

    There have been no hazardous materials spills by Norfolk Southern in the area recently.

    MUNCIE - Jay Dotson has joined Muncie Family YMCA as a tae kwon do instructor.

    He will teach classes in 6-week sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the downtown YMCA for ages 6 and older beginning the week of Feb. 24.

    Dotson has been a tae kwon do instructor for more than 10 years.He started learning tae kwon do when he was 16 years old at the YMCA.

    Since then, he has studied under Carl Jackson, working his way up to the promotion of the fourth-degree black belt, which he earned in 2002.

    Dotson is the chief of security at Ball Memorial Hospital and a sergeant of the Muncie City Police reserves.He also is a certified defense tactics instructor through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
