Gerald Doornbos, a farmer from the Netherlands who serves as president of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers, said recent efforts to decrease EU farm subsidies during a summit in Berlin were scaled back due to low world prices. Doornbos said the European concept of "multifunctionality," an ideal to support aesthetic and social functions that farmers provide, should not be viewed as a "trade-distorting" policy.
As for the issue of genetically enhanced crops, Doornbos said consumers will ultimately play a large role. "(Consumers) are even right when they're wrong," he said. "In the end, if they don't want it, that's what matters."

Doornbos said the two sides must "get out of the business of us saying your payments are bad and you saying our payments are bad." He encouraged U.S. and European farmers to share ideas on how to support farmers in ways that do not distort trade and to share both sides' ideas with members of their respective governments. -

To answer to this question , I would just like to echo some of the main comments made by the President of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers ( IFAP ) , Mr Gerald Doornbos , which is a fair translation of our views in that respect. When I say our views I mean those of Mauritius , ACP countries and of the developing world in general.
These can be summarised as follows :.
Liberalisation of agricultural trade should not be regarded as and end in itself. Rather it should serve to ensure economic growth and greater integration of countries to the world economy thus fulfilling its objective of enhancing the livelihoods of people throughout the world.
