Head Coach Brian Dooley begins his fifth season at the helm of the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team with a new assistant coach and high goals for a team that had one of the greatest seasons in program history. The 2002 team will forever be in the FAU record books as the team that earned the program's first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title, after finishing with a 14-5 record.FAU defeated the University of Miami, 2-1, and Florida International University, 4-0, for the first time in program history, after previously holding a 0-21 record between the two, as well as defeating Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville University, 1-0, for the first time in the Dooley era and first time since 1996.Despite a first-round bye, the Lady Owls fell in the semi-finals of the A-Sun Championships to JU, 3-2 in OT.This year, with the A-Sun Tournament being held on the campus of FAU, the Lady Owls will look to take the next step and win the A-Sun Championships and earn a berth at the NCAA Tournament.
Though the year ended quickly, Dooley reached a prolific milestone. The team's final regular-season victory over Gardner-Webb not only clinched the program's first title, but it also earned Dooley career victory number 100.Dooley, the program's all-time wins leader, now holds a four-year record at FAU of 47-25-2, only three wins shy of reaching 50 for his FAU career. He has recorded three-straight 14-win seasons, something he had not accomplished previously at Barry.
Dooley, a long-time South Florida soccer fixture, came to FAU after four years as Barry University's head women's soccer coach. Before that, he served as an assistant for both Barry and Florida International University. In his first season with the Lady Owls, he took a team that had never posted a Division I winning record to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the program's first post-season appearance. He also saw Melissa Bobby flourish under his system and earn A-Sun Player of the Year honors. In 2000, the Lady Owls made it even further into post-season play, as they fell in the finals of the A-Sun Tournament, 2-1, but not before becoming the sixth most improved team in the nation.2001 saw FAU again make it to the finals of the A-Sun Tournament before falling by an identical score of 2-1.
With the team reaching a new high, Dooley was also instrumental in the University becoming involved with women's soccer on a international level, serving as a host practice site for several national teams, including the USA national team.In just one season, he opened the University's soccer field doors to fans of soccer both young and old.
Dooley took the reigns of Barry University in 1995, guiding them to the NCAA Tournament each year he served as head coach. The Lady Buccaneers were runner-up finishers in the 1995 NCAA Championship while making quarterfinal appearances in 1996 and 1997.Barry's overall record in Dooley's four-year tenure as head coach was 53-12-4.
As an assistant at Barry from 1990 to 1994, Dooley played an integral part in the team's success, which included Division II National Championships in 1992 and 1993.The Lady Bucs had a mark of 71-11-2 in Dooley's years as an assistant.
Dooley played collegiate soccer at Florida International University and was a midfielder on the Golden Panthers' 1982 National Championship team.He received a bachelor's degree from Nova University in 1987.
Following his playing career, Dooley was an assistant women's coach at Florida International for five years and the head girls' coach at Hollywood Hills High School for four seasons. He also was head boys' soccer coach at South Plantation High School for seven seasons before taking the head coaching position at Barry. He also taught math at South Plantation.
Dooley has been involved in youth soccer for more than a decade. He currently is the coaching director for the Weston Soccer Club.He is a member of the Florida Youth Soccer Association State Coaching Staff.
