"Typically a caregiver will hold on for too long," said Terry Donoghue, president of the deHoernle Alzheimer's Pavilion board of trustees and a member of the board of directors.

Often, Donoghue says, the stress of being a full-time caregiver can lead to poor health and other difficulties.

"When you think about it, this is one of the few diseases that is harder on the caregiver than the patient," he said.
